A West End Neighbors’ Garden Party! June 25, 2016 3 to 8 p.m. Summit Brewing This year, 2016, West End neighbors celebrate the last eight years’ successful yard and garden tours, their 140 gardens and gardeners, and the thousands of “tourists” they bring to the West End. There will be a plant sale, a garden art sale, a children’s potting table and coloring contest, and Summit’s array of beers and root beer! Peeps Hot Box and Signature Café on Wheels will bring their menus—plus more!
Our celebratory beer garden will take place on the lawn between Summit Brewing and its bluff—an idyllic location. All are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets as for a picnic in a park since there is limited seating. Please also bus, car pool and bicycle to reduce parking. Bike racks will be provided.
Entertainment includes Meg Ashling who will play from 3 – 5 p.m. She has sung for most of her life and plays multiple instruments including guitar, piano, clarinet, mandolin, and harmonica. Her songs are rooted in her rural life and gardening and she has played at the Black Dog and First Avenue. Dan “Daddy Squeeze” Newton plays with a number of musicians on accordion with an extensive venue list including Prarie Home Companion and the Kennedy Center for the Arts. Since 1987, he has dazzled audiences with his sparkling skills and vast repertoire and will play for us from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Our commemorative garden party booklet Eight years; 140 Gardens; Thousands of Visitors will also reach back into and document the history of brewing in the West End, not to mention two late eighteenth, early nineteenth century neighborhood beer gardens, Schade’s located at Fort Street (West 7th ), Webster and Toronto Streets, and Banholzer’s located at Shepard Road and Butternut. The booklet is free with plant purchases, and $2 without. In addition, the St. Paul Pioneer Press has donated copies of its “Brewtown” insert for the occasion.
Next year the neighborhood of Little Bohemia will reprise the West End Neighborhood Garden Tour!
Join the fun! Labeled plant donations will be welcomed for the plant sale. Label your donations and drop them off at Summit Brewing, 910 Montreal Circle Thursday –Saturday, June 23-25 before the party. Follow the signs to “shipping and receiving”. Thank you.
