Information event for the Community Gate Project!
On the occasion of the Grand Excursion up the Mississippi River, we set up
a booth in the park to answer questions about the Community Gate Project,
the North High Bridge Park, and the neighborhoods. |
May
3, 2004
Construction begins on the Community Gate Project!
A baptismal gate, salvage from the local Czech-Slovak National Church, St.
Stanislaus Kostka, will be installed in the park to commemorate
contributions of Czech and Slovak immigrants and families in building the
neighborhoods of the West End, between Downtown St. Paul and Fort Snelling.
Tax-deductible donations to the West 7th Federation (651) 298 5599 are
welcome!

September 24, 2003:
The St. Paul City Council adopted a resolution that was signed by the St.
Paul Mayor, Randy Kelly, giving final approval and go-ahead to the
Community Gate Project. |

July 13, 2003:
Community information event: neighbors gathered for an ice cream
social and kiddie parade, as well as to meet the artist, Craig David, for
a design review. |

June 2003:
The Metropolitan Regional Arts Council granted the North High Bridge Task
Force an $8,500 grant for the Community Gate Project. |

29, 2003:
An old fashioned Czech Beer Hall raises about $4,000 toward the
installation in the Park of the Baptismal Gate. The Showed-up Band,
Minnesota Czech and Slovak Singers, and
St. Paul Czeck and Slovak Folk Dancers entertain, and proceeds from
the sale of beverages and food, as well as silent auction, support our
cause. Publication of Gateway to a
New World
Special guest appearances included Jacob
Skalnik, Cultural Attaché, Czech Republic; Jennifer Vollmer, Ms.
Czech-Slovak Minnesota/USA; Senator Sandy Pappas in a reprise of her role
as Blanche Yurka (actress and author born in the West End); and Ol' Picha,
Bohemian bartender from the late 1800s (Bob Webster). |
November
2, 2002:
$5,000 grant from St. Paul's Cultural STAR program
The North High Bridge Park Task Force of the District 9 Community
Council/West 7th Fort Road Federation received a $5,000 grant from St.
Paul's Cultural STAR program of $5,000 to both replace the Green Chair,
and install the baptismal gate from St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Total
project costs are estimated at $20,000. Additional grants received include
$500 from the St. Paul Riverfront Corporation and $2500 from the Abraham &
Lillian Rosenberg Foundation (New York), with the support of St. Paul
Public Art. |

May 20, 2001:
The North High Bridge Task Force celebrated park developments by
participating in the Fillmore Mississippi Heritage Conference, under the
aegis of the McKnight Foundation. |
