Plant experts! Plant Sale!
Support neighborhood and park garden projects at the offices of the West 7th Federation.

9: 417 Duke
A shady front garden.  The focus is on native ground covers and understory plants including hosta. Stone and rock of all sizes are integrated liberally. Sunny spots focus on plants that are attractive to birds, bees and butterflies. Over the years, this garden has become a popular dinnertime destination for birds nesting closer to the river.

10: 529 Michigan
The back yard of this gray stucco home is bordered with an iron fence containing two small ponds, a statue, grape vines, annual and perennial flower beds. A side yard rose garden completes the picture.

11: 503 St. Clair
Garden edged by a decorative iron fence with container and window box color accents. Perennial borders and conifer area with ornamental grasses fill the yard.

12: 376 St. Clair
30 year homeowner, faced a flowerless, plantless, shrubless clean site. Today you see two mounded boulevard gardens, a historic voyager tree sculpture, street paver driveway and patio plus a filled landscape.

13: North High Bridge Park, Smith Avenue, High Bridge & Cliff Street
Twenty years ago neighbors reclaimed this desolate, wind-swept gateway over-looking the river valley. The sculpture garden includes the Watcher (1995, Zoran Mojsilov); the Community Gate Project (2004, Craig David) celebrating Czech and Slovak immigrants into the West End; the Peace Pole (1997 Girl Scout Cadette Troop 464), and the Green chair (1991 & 2002, Green Chair Project, Two or More). The day lily collection dates from the late 1980’s with varieties on sale at the Federation. A wild flower/butterfly garden has begun down from the gate. Look for Little Fuji.

14: 218 Goodrich
This small urban garden features traditional mixed border and lush lily bed. Street pavers edging and paths define the garden spaces. New fruit trees in traditional espalier fashion.

15: 436 Smith
Raised bed gardens built with retaining walls over a former asphalt lot. What can be done with a full western exposure on a seemingly unplanted dead-zone over bedrock. The garden supports small trees and has perennials, annuals, vines and shrubs. Includes an alley garden alongside the building.

16: 169 Goodrich
A landscaped and tiered double lot offers an Asian-themed variety of plantings, pathways and stone lanterns over-looking the Mississippi River Valley. Collections include conifers, weeping trees and lilacs.

17: 299 Ryan
The back garden is unusual for a townhouse. A cottage garden frames a deck with wildflowers in the shady areas, and a variety of perennials provide constant color throughout the season.
